Assistant Director | Company: Cathexis Theatre
In 2017, I assistant directed and acted in Cathexis Theatre's new production. Murder Mime the Musical tells the story of a passionate opera student named Max, who damages his vocal cords during a very important audition. Without a voice, Max turns to mime as his new creative outlet. Unfortunately, Max's bad luck continues as his life spirals into crazy chaos. He even ends up accidentally killing some of his friends. Without a voice, Max desperately tries to explain himself – but not many believe him.
Cathexis Theatre is known for their brave, eccentric new works that push boundaries, raise questions, and challenge us. What I find beautiful about these dark and humorous stories is that the core of these musicals often lie within the struggles of dealing with mental illness. In this particular show, Max's depression leads him down a dark path due to the fact that he has lost his regular coping mechanisms of talking and singing.
Assistant Directing this production gave me more experience with directing musicals and new works. I have continued to work with Cathexis Theatre since this production, and I am currently the resident producer for this company.
